General Banking School - Year 2

The Kentucky Bankers Association’s (KBA) General Banking School is designed for employees who possess a current knowledge of banking that sufficiently prepares them for this advanced paced curriculum. The mission of this school is to teach bankers to understand the business of managing a bank company, the financial decisions that must be made, how each bank department is inter-related and the economic environment of the business of banking. The KBA General Banking School will prepare bankers for any of the national graduate schools of banking.

Who Should Attend
The school is designed for recent college graduates, management trainees, and bank employees who wish to build on skills acquired through the Foundations of Banking School and/or AIB. The following minimum requirements are suggested:
  • An associate degree, AIB courses in Money and Banking, Principles of Banking, and/or Accounting, or equivalent college courses and five years experience in the financial service industry; or

  • A bachelor’s degree in finance or economics and two years experience in the financial service industry; or

  • A master’s degree in finance or economics and no experience in the financial service industry; or

  • A graduate of the Essentials of Banking School.

  • Applicants with special circumstances will be handled on an individual basis.

Benefits of Attending
The General Banking School builds a bridge between concepts and practical application. The curriculum consists of practical classroom sessions and experience with a computer-generated bank simulation, BankExec. The balance of classroom and simulation creates a program that will be of value to bankers throughout their career. The school provides bankers with:
  • A comprehensive understanding of the connections between banking functions and the banking environment.

  • Practical application of classroom learning by completing Intersession assignments.

  • Opportunities to experience the complexity of managing a successful bank through a hands-on computer simulation.

Graduation Requirements
To successfully complete the required course of study and graduate from the school, the following requirements must be met. Participants must:
  • Attend all classes.

  • Attend intersession day in the fall, complete the intersession exercises and receive a satisfactory evaluation of the exercises.

  • Participate in BankExec, as a part of the Year II curriculum, and receive a satisfactory evaluation.

  • Pass all exams.

Classes & Materials
Participants will check-in for classes the first day of the program, Sunday, June 1, 2024, at the Griffin Gate Marriott, 1800 Newtown Pike, Lexington, Kentucky. Classes will begin immediately following orientation. All classes will be held at Griffin Gate Marriott

Curriculum materials will be distributed the first day of class. Participants should bring their own calculator and supplies for taking notes during class.

Housing & Meals
Bankers will check in Sunday afternoon/evening at the Griffin Gate Marriott, 1800 Newtown Pike, Lexington, Kentucky. Roommates will not be assigned. If a registrant prefers to share a room please contact Paula Cross with the information.

All lunches will be served at Marriott Griffin Gate. Bankers will be on their own for dinner. Breakfast will be available with lodging.

Admission & Fees
First priority for admission is given to members of the KBA. Applicants are accepted on a first come, first serve basis. To apply, submit an application to the KBA by May 20, 2024. If an applicant suffers from any disabilities that might influence his or her participation in the school, please enclose a brief letter with the application.

The annual tuition includes curriculum, computer fees, lodging and some meals. The fee for the intersession/simulation exercises is $215; this includes materials, faculty review of assignments and any special meetings. Participants will be billed in August for this fee.

Applicants withdrawing before May 20, 2024 will be refunded all fees except a $150 cancellation fee. There is no refund if an applicant withdraws after the deadline or fails to attend the school, with the exception of extenuating circumstances. Due to commitments and expenses we cannot reverse, such as: handouts, food, beverages, room rentals, speaker fees, etc.; even extenuating circumstances will require partial refunds because of these expenses. Substitutions are welcome. Refund requests must be submitted in writing/email to the KBA.

He has served as a faculty member of the KBA General Banking School since 2000 and has been an instructor for The American Institute of Banking.

She also taught for several years at the Graduate School of Banking of the South at LSU. Mr. Paul M. Ratterman currently serves as Managing Director–Fixed Income Capital Markets at Stifel. His banking career began with Liberty National Bank in 1978. He has been working in his current capacity for 35 years, formerly at Liberty, Bank One, J.P. Morgan, and now Stifel.

In addition to receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics at Hanover College in 1978 and an MBA from Bellarmine University in 1983, he is also a graduate of the American Bankers Association Graduate School of Bank Investments at the University of Oklahoma.

He is a faculty member of the American Bankers Association’s Stonier Graduate School of Banking and the ABA International School of Banking. He also instructs Asset/Liability Management and Portfolio Investment classes for the Kentucky School of Banking.

In 1998 he co-founded Independence Bancorp and served as Vice Chair, President & CEO of Independence and its successor 1st Independence Financial Group and 1st Independence Bank until their sale in 2008. Mr. White subsequently served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Madison Financial Corporation and Madison Bank in Richmond, KY, and as founder, President & CEO of Anchor Performance Group and as founder and managing member of Pillar Capital, LLC.

Mr. White has been a faculty member at the Kentucky Bankers Association School of Banking for many years. In addition, he has presented sessions on leadership, strategic planning, sales training, and sales management at numerous industry conferences and events over the years.

Mr. White earned his bachelor’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University, where he is a member of their Hall of Distinguished Alumni, and his MBA from Bellarmine University. He previously served as Chairman of the board of the EKU Business Advisory Council.

Mr. White gives back to his community by serving on the Southern Indiana Economic Development Council, on the board and executive committees of the Community Foundation of Southern Indiana and the River Heritage Conservancy, on the Floyd County Board of Zoning Appeals, and as a class leader at Graceland Baptist Church. He has previously served on the board of the Southern Indiana Chamber of Commerce, The Metro United Way, Goodwill of Southern Indiana, and many others.

Education Alliance Cancellation Policy
Substitutions are always welcome and encouraged. All cancellations and substitutions request must be submitted in writing prior to the event.

KBA Seminar Registrations can cancel 30 days prior to the event date and receive a full refund. Cancellations received between 29 days and 10 days prior to the event will be charged a $50 processing fee. There will be no refund for cancellations received less than 10 days prior to the event.

KBA Schools Applicants can withdraw from a KBA School 10 days prior to the 1st day of the school for a refund minus a $150 cancellation fee.
